Vasya's Story

Vasya is a dog of the Cane Corso breed. Since 2016, he has been a member of the Ukrainian military in the Donbas region.

His first owner, for unknown reasons, wanted to hang him. After this incident, the dog fled and was wounded and became attached to a man named Roman on one of the streets of Ternopil.

The man brought the dog home. He refused to eat or drink at first but eventually was able to come out.

When Roman called out to a friend whose name was Vasya, the dog reacted to this name, so they decided to call him that.

Roman and Vasya have joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and have served in the 503rd the separate battalion of the Marine Corps, which was engaged in intelligence service.

Despite not performing combat missions, Vasya was able to raise the spirit of the military and easily endure the sounds of shots and explosions.

In the Donetsk region, Vasya disappeared when his brigade was stationed around Maryinka. He was found by Marines' reconnaissance drones. Vasya fell into a trap and became entangled in barbed wire and attempted to free himself with his paws. The Marines were planning to go rescue the dog, but Vasya returned on his own. To escape the trap, in a brave act he bit off one of his paws and crawled to his own with a torn neck.

Vasya was provided with first aid by the Ukrainian military, and he was carried on a stretcher to the nearest settlement to the veterinarian. When the danger to his life was over, Vasya was taken home to Ternopil, and then to Poland to have a prosthesis made for him.

After returning to Ukraine, Vasya was not only waiting for a meeting with his family, but he also had to deal with a new challenge: adjusting to a new limb in war conditions. War, and the constant rumble of weapon fire can easily make animals less likely to learn something new. Stress in animals works the same way it does in humans: if we are stressed, it is harder for us to learn new things.

Vasya has faced many challenges in his life to stay alive. However, his struggle is still ongoing because of the war in Ukraine.
